Rio de Janeiro is pure magic, especially when the sun starts setting. Looking for the best places to catch a sunset in Rio de Janeiro? Don’t worry, I’ve got you covered!
In this post, I’ll tell you about the best spots to watch the sunset in Rio de Janeiro. Some are super famous, and others are hidden gems that locals love. I’m going to spill all the secrets for you!
Where to watch the sunset in Rio de Janeiro?
1. Arpoador Beach
Let’s kick things off with a classic, shall we? Arpoador Beach, nestled between Copacabana and Ipanema, is THE go-to spot for sunset enthusiasts. Picture this: the sun kisses the horizon, casting a warm glow on the waves, while surfers ride their last waves of the day. It’s pure magic.
Along with several other people (both locals and tourists), you should arrive at Arpoador Rock (Pedra do Arpoador) in the late afternoon and find a spot to spread out your beach towel and sit.
In just a few minutes, you’ll witness the sun setting near the Two Brothers Mountain (Morro Dois Irmãos), a truly breathtaking sight. The sky usually displays beautiful hues, and if you look over the buildings to your right, you’ll catch a glimpse of the Christ the Redeemer statue.
Join the others in one of Rio’s greatest traditions: those who watch the sunset at Arpoador must offer their applause as the sun bids farewell.
Pro tip: Before the sunset, you can join a free walking tour in the area, and take the chance to visit Copacabana and Ipanema beaches with a local guide.
2. Sugarloaf Mountain (Pão de Açúcar)
For a panoramic view that’ll leave you speechless, head to Sugarloaf Mountain, known as Pão de Açúcar in Portuguese. Take the cable car up and witness the city below undergo a magical transformation, as the sun dips below the horizon, casting a warm glow over the landscape.
From up there, you can see everything – the famous beaches, the green forests, and all the cool buildings. The bay looks like a mirror, reflecting the colors of the sky.
I have to confess: Sugarloaf Mountain offers one of my favorite viewpoints in Rio de Janeiro. And it gets even better at sunset. It’s pure magic. It is one of the city’s most visited attractions, and it remains open until around 8 pm, which is perfect for experiencing the daytime, catching the sunset, and enjoying a nighttime view of the city.
3. Urca’s Wall (Mureta da Urca)
One of the most enchanting spots to witness the sunset in Rio de Janeiro is the Urca Wall (Mureta da Urca).
This charming waterfront promenade nestled in the Urca neighborhood offers a front-row seat to one of nature’s most awe-inspiring performances. As the sun begins its descent, casting golden hues over the serene Guanabara Bay, you’ll feel a sense of tranquility wash over you.
The view from Mureta da Urca is breathtaking. With the iconic Sugarloaf Mountain in the backdrop, the bay transforms into a shimmering canvas of oranges, pinks, and purples. It’s as if the horizon itself is ablaze with color, putting on a show that words can hardly capture.
Locals and visitors alike gather along the mureta, creating a warm and communal atmosphere. Conversations flow, laughter echoes, and the collective anticipation of the setting sun creates a palpable sense of unity. It’s a moment that transcends language, a shared appreciation for the beauty that Rio de Janeiro generously bestows.
A good place to stay is near Bar Urca, a traditional “boteco” where you can enjoy local snacks like pastel and empadas. Another option is to stay at “Pobreta da Urca”, which is closer to Urca Grill restaurant, offering a clearer view of the Christ the Redeemer.
I also appreciate the view from “Quadrado da Urca”, where this picture was taken:
4. Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon (Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas)
For a more tranquil sunset experience, head to Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas. Find a cozy spot along the shoreline to watch the sun dip below the surrounding mountains. The reflections on the water create a picturesque scene.
For the more active visitors, there’s the option to rent a bike and cycle around Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon, or go for a run, or even explore the water with paddle boats (available for rent).
5. Mauá Pier (Pier Mauá)
A lesser-known spot to catch the sunset in the Marvelous City is the terrace surrounding the Museu do Amanhã, at Mauá Pier. The show is jaw-dropping, and the modern setting around the museum complements it even more.
You can visit the Museum of Tomorrow in the afternoon, which is one of the most popular attractions in Rio de Janeiro, and then enjoy a beautiful sunset to end the day in style. I promise it’s completely worth it.
6 – Sailboat excursion at Guanabara Bay
Experiencing a unique perspective of the Marvelous City, one of the finest ways to savor the Rio de Janeiro sunset is by taking a sailboat excursion on Guanabara Bay. It allows you to witness the city’s beauty from an entirely different angle, with the majestic mountains adding to the awe-inspiring scenery.
The boat departs from Marina da Glória, and you’ll pass very close to Flamengo Beach and Sugarloaf Mountain, sailing all the way to the neighboring city of Niterói. On calm sea days, it’s possible for the boat to stop, allowing you to enjoy a break for swimming.
7 – Dona Marta Viewpoint (Mirante dona Marta)
Located on one of the city’s several hills, near the Christ the Redeemer statue, the Dona Marta viewpoint (standing at an impressive 360 meters) offers a stunning panoramic view that has been gaining fame in the city.
While it’s a more sought-after spot for watching the sunrise in Rio de Janeiro, the Dona Marta Viewpoint also provides a beautiful sunset at Rio de Janeiro. It’s the perfect place to relax, capture incredible photos, and enjoy a moment of pure tranquility.
